SDCC 2022 wrap up

SDCC 2022 wrap up

San Diego Comic-con 2022 has concluded and with it came an explosive weekend back after nearly 3 long years. The weekend saw many Eisner awards handed out, new trailers such as Amazon Prime’s Rings of Power series, and of course who could forget the explosive Hall H panel to cap off Saturday night? Let’s take a look back and recap the weekend that was SDCC 2022.

First we had the many Eisner award winners, which if you do not know are named after Will Eisner for creative achievement in American comic books. Creators such as, Tom King for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Daniel Warren Johnson for Beta Ray Bill: Argent Star, Kelly Sue DeConnick and Phil Jimenez for Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons, Tom Taylor for Nightwing #87: Get Grayson, Marc Bernardin for Adora and the Distance, and of course many others for their work in the industry. We were also given trailers and news for highly anticipated shows and films. However, perhaps the two biggest panels to take place were held Saturday in Hall H. First up was Warner Bros showcasing two of their upcoming films. The panel kicked off with the Shazam: Fury of the Gods cast taking center stage. We learned that the villains of the film will be the Daughter of Atlas and that the Shazam family are established heroes as the film takes place a few years after the events of the first film. The panel was capped off with an exciting trailer to which anytime the family gather and transform into their iconic heroes I can’t help but get chills. Last up was the man and legend himself Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who appeared in full Black Adam garb amidst smoke appearing to float in air. He discussed how this was a passion project for him years in the making even bringing the lanyards given out to life. At the end a trailer was debuted which was showcasing a more violent side to the film. We see him ripping arms off and very impressive skills by Doctor Fate. It was also announced that Viola Davis will be returning as Amanda Waller who seemingly will be calling upon The Justice Society of America to take down the anti-hero. As the panel ended every fan in attendance was given a ticket to the film in IMAX. Shazam: Fury of the Gods releases December 21st, 2022 and Black Adam October 21st, 2022.

Last but certainly not least Marvel brought down the house with their grand return to Hall H. The panel kicked off with. a sizzle reel narrated by the late Stan Lee and Kevin Feige announcing upcoming projects. Phase four will end with Wakanda Forever which releases November 11th, 2022. Next Antman and the Wasp: Quantumania will be kicking off phase five. Other titles taking place in this phase include: Echo, Secret Invasion, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, Loki, The MArvels, Blade, IRonheart, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, Daredevil: Born Again, Captain America: New World Order, and capped off with Thunderbolts.

The biggest news however, was that we got three massive phase six announcements. Marvels first family the Fantastic Four will kick off this phase followed up by not one but TWO Avengers films. The first film is Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and the second is Avengers: Secret Wars. While both seem far off I wouldn’t put it past them to make casting announcements at the upcoming D23. The panel showcased footage from Antman and the Wasp: Quantumania which confirmed the appearance of MODOK and Bill Murray. James Gunn and the entire cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 took the stage and shared footage with the crowd which promises to be a very emotional end to this run of the group. Finally the entire cast of Wakanda Forever took the stage in what was an emotional reunion with both the fans and crew. They debuted the long anticipated trailer showing a somber tone to the film as expected but, colorful all in it’s own. Characters such as Dominique Thorne’s Ironheart appeared and NAmor played by Tenoch Huerta.

It was an action packed weekend for attendees and geek culture lovers alike. We already are making plans for next year but first we have DC Fandome and D23 coming at us. One thing is for sure though, we are living a very very good life right now.
